Under 100 Days to stop UKIP

With less than days to go before the European Elections, the Liberal Democrats are the only party campaigning to keep Britain IN Europe.

Today, Nick Clegg has warned that if UKIP wins and takes us out of Europe, it would wreck the recovery and risk 3 million British jobs.

The Conservatives are flirting with exit from Europe and the Labour party cannot pluck up the courage to speak up. Only the Liberal Democrats are fighting to keep Britain IN Europe.

We're IN for the sake of 3 million jobs. We're IN so that we can work with our neighbours to tackle cross-border crime and fight climate change. We're IN because we know that Britain can only stand tall in the world if we stand tall in our own back yard.

Tell us why you are IN.

The more people who shout about why they think Britain is better off IN Europe, the more chance we have of stopping UKIP.

Why are you IN?

2,951 reasons

I think Britain is better off IN Europe because...

In practical terms, if we want to do business with our near neighbours we will probably have to obey their trade and environmental laws, etc., anyway, so we might as well be IN and be able to have a role in shaping those laws.

In principle, far more can be achieved by working with people than against them in any sphere. Why should Europeans want to work with us if we reject what they stand for and are paying for? The Commonwealth doesn’t want us any more, remember. Those days are GONE.

Personally, I’m proud to be European with all the rich cultural diversity and open-mindedness that comes with it. Let us be guided by what’s possible and not by suspicion of foreigners.

It is far better to be at the negotiating table making decisions that WILL affect our future.

The biggest challenges facing our future generations can no longer be solved by the nation states of yesterday. It has brought peace to a continent once divided by politics and war. It protects our people, makes them prosperous and breaks down barriers to freedom.

We would not be as good at higher education and scientific research if we were not in the EU. It is really important that we cooperate with Europe, this means both an academic collaboration which happens over the EU, and also the financial cooperation that happens over the EU. The EU is incredibly important for this, without it we’d lose a lot of academic funding and a lot of academic collaboration.

Also, travel would become a lot harder and more expensive if we were not in the EU, making it more difficult for the less “well off” to get to a european or even worldwide vacation or visit family abroad. Business would have to pay more to transport physical and virtual products over borders, potentially plunging the economy into recession once again, and prices would certainly rise.

Finally, I fear that if we left the EU then our Human Rights in Britain would become diminished, and we’d tumble further and further towards some kind of authoritarian dystopian society – enforced by central government, the police and the military. This is definitely not something that we want, as our human rights and freedoms are what makes us human and allows us to improve ourselves in morality, ethics and intelligence.

We need the EU – for academia, for culture and travel, for business and for human rights.

You look at those who are “Out” and you realise that they live in the past nostalgically harping back to a Britain which doesn’t and can’t exist any more.

Britain is part of Europe and deserves a say in the future of the continent. Our history and culture is shaped by us being European. We have personal links, commercial links, cultural links, political links with all other European countries; this makes us British.

The EU fights for consumer rights + protection for all Europeans – cheaper roaming, safer standards, travel/health insurance etc. It also supports Europe’s development in innovation, research, green energy etc. Things that are important for the future but are sidelined in today’s national politics.

As a powerhouse Euro economy, we must be at the decision making table, influential in a united Europe, not a declining irrelevance outside it. Bring on the Euro!

The EU sees human rights as universal & indivisible – it promotes & defends them both within its borders & with non-EU countries.
